Sheffield Metalwork focuses primarily on decorative/domestic objects, specifically holloware and cutlery. The materiality of steel and cutting-edge design relate well to the subject matter and bold colours are used as a counterpoint to the metallic finishes. Visitors can engage with the continuing traditions of craftsmanship and fine metalworking using hands-on interactives.
In total contrast is the Guild of St George collection formed by John Ruskin. The collection includes minerals, ornithological prints, paintings, drawings, manuscripts and plastercasts. The designs allow for easy changing of printed/painted material which can only be on display for a limited period due to deterioration by light and the gallery has a ‘lofty’ feel to reflect the great mind of this eminent Victorian figure.
