This touring exhibition for the V&A Museum of Childhood which launched in November 2007, visits 9 venues around the UK over a three year period.
The exhibition examines the impact space exploration has had on everyday life, especially futuristic design and the fantasy worlds created for children and adults alike.
Our concept for the exhibition was inspired as much by the interior and furniture design of Verner Panton and Eero Aarnio, as by the more obvious rich seam of science fiction graphics.
On display are real space objects, largely from the V&A Museum’s collections, as well as classic space-inspired designs and childhood objects. Genuine space exploration items are displayed alongside consumer goods styled along similar lines. The exhibition’s themes include: space exploration, fantasy, in the home, fashion and advances in technology.
We created vestibule-like environments to house each theme and use object display, graphics, interactive installations and audio to explore the subjects.
Visitors of all ages particularly enjoyed the ‘Design your own Space Age bedroom’ interactive. The touch screen interactive enable users to create a room layout based on objects on display in the exhibition. The game was also made available on the V&A website. All exhibition design, graphics and digital interactives were handled in-house by Designmap.
